46th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions fetch RMB 42.21 million

The 46th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions concluded at the Beijing International Hotel in Beijing on June 18, raising a total of 42.21 million yuan in sales.

More than 2,000 items, including Chinese painting and calligraphy, porcelain and works of art, were presented at the auctions.

The section on Chinese painting and calligraphy took the strategy of “improving the quality of the lots but reducing their numbers”, which attracted a large number of collectors. Eventually, the total sales volume for this section was 31.56 million yuan.

Huang Binhong’s landscape painting, Living in Seclusion among the Mountains and Streams, hit the highest price and sold for 2.875 million yuan.

Works from other famous painters also fetched good prices, like Zhang Daqian’s Chinese Parasol Tree sold for 2.3 million yuan; Pan Tianshou’s Raven and Rock sold for 1.43 million yuan and Qi Baishi’s Loquat Fruits sold for 1.26 million yuan.

Chinese calligraphy works also were the focus of attention for collectors. Famous Chinese calligrapher Qi Gong’s Five-Word Poem in Running Script sold for 3.68 million yuan.

At this quarterly auction, China Guardian especially presented Gao Guanhua’s works. Gao is a master of Chinese traditional bird-and-flower painting. His representative work, Lotus, was sold for 115,000 yuan.

Classical Chinese paintings have always been very popular among collectors. Some works were sold for unexpected prices during the auctions. Chen Chun’s landscape painting, Fog Shrouding Pine Trees on Snow Mountain, was sold for 460,000 yuan, much higher than its estimated price of 15,000 yuan.

China Guardian presented nearly 1,100 items of porcelain and works of art for this quarterly auction. The total sales volume of this section was 10.23 million yuan with a transaction rate of 77.55 percent.

A ceramic set used in the study made by the official kiln during the reign of the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong Emperor hit the highest price, at 943,000 yuan.

Also, a pair of bell-shaped cups with butterfly patterns made during the reign of the Qing Dynasty’s Yongzheng Emperor aroused fierce competition among bidders and finally sold for 195,500 yuan.
