China Guardian 09 Autumn Auction Achieved A Total Turnover of 1.533 billion Yuan

China Guardian 2009 Autumn Auction completed successfully on November 23 in Beijing. The various auctions including Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, Porcelain and Jade Crafts, Chinese Oil Paintings and Sculpture, Ancient Rare Books, Stamps, Coins and Bronze Mirrors have achieved a total turnover of 1.533 billion Yuan, a record high in the company’s history.

Among them, Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy has contributed a record high total turnover of more than 1.1 billion yuan. "Calligraphy from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties”, the 1st ever special auction for calligraphy in China, has delivered spectacular results of more than 248 million yuan, with an average hammer price of close to 3 million yuan/piece and a turnover rate of 91%. "Writings by Prominent Personage in the Song Dynasty on Attendant Xu’s Seal Character” by Zhu Xi, Zhang Jingxiu, etc. was sold at 100.8 million yuan, the highest bid price for the special auction; while "Du Fu’s Poems in Cursive Hand” by Song Ke was traded at 68.32 million RMB; Dong Qichang’s calligraphy “Long Shen Gan Ying Ji” in running script listed in the Qing imperial catalogue The Precious Collection of the Stone Moat: the First Edition (Shiqu baoji chubian) was sold at 44.8 million yuan.

In the special auction of “New China Fine Arts”, nearly 50 works of oil painting, sculpture, calligraphy and painting generated a total turnover of 138 million yuan, with Wu Guanzhong's "Northern Scenery" hammered at the highest price of 30.24 million Yuan. In addition, "Chairman Mao at the Steel Mill" painted by Jin Shangyi in 1969 was sold at 20.216 million yuan; Jiang Zhaohe’s "The Chinese People Have Since Stood Up" created on October 1, 1949 was auctioned at 19.04 million yuan; and Qi Baishi’s “Peace” painted in 1952 was sold at 5.656 million yuan.

The 1st ever court auction introduced by China Guardian "The Qing Court Treasures" has achieved outstanding results of a total turnover of 97.888 million yuan. A Ming Dynasty “Yue Lu Zhi Yin” lacquered Guqin with box was hammered at a high price of 21.84 million yuan, setting a new record for the Ming Dynasty Guqin. Furthermore, tapestry "Notes on Black Cloud Chamber by Emperor Qianlong" was auctioned at 17.92 million yuan; "Qing Emperor Qianlong Cloisonne famillie rose mountain & sea pattern covered bottle" was sold at a same high price of 17.92 million yuan; another lot "Qing Emperor Qianlong Yong Rong Jade Buddhist Sutras" was eventually hammered at a price of 6.72 million yuan, 27 times of the estimated price of 250,000-350,000 yuan.

For Ancient Chinese Calligraphy and Painting section, “Hidden Peaks among Green Hills” by Xiao Yun ranked No. 1 with a hammer price of 67.2 million yuan. Wen Zhengming’s "Quiet and Distant Xishan Mountain" was sold at 17.92 million yuan. The biggest piece know so far by Lan Ying "Dark Green Rock and Good Trees”, Wang Guxiang’s "Flowers with Title Inscribed by Emperor Qianlong" collected by the Qing Court, and Dong Qichang’s "A Rest at Mountain Posthouse" were all sold at the same high price of 13.44 million yuan.

For Contemporary and Modern Calligraphy and Painting, Fu Baoshi’s peak time masterpiece "Evening Rain at Bashan Mountain" was sold at a high price of 18.48 million yuan. In addition, Wu Guanzhong’s "Ox Washing under a Willow Shade" was auctioned at 14.56 million yuan; Huang Binhong's "Four Pieces of Light Crimson Landscape" and Chang Ta-chien’s "Five-colored Lotus" were both auctioned at 12.32 million yuan; Xu Beihong’s “Three Horses under Willow Shade” created in 1944 was sold at 11.76 million yuan. Cui Ruzhuo’s "A Thousand Mountains Snow Capped” led the Contemporary Painting and Calligraphy Section with a hammer price of 3.248 million yuan. Wang Mingming’s "Elegant Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion" was auctioned at 2.856 million yuan.

In addition, in the “Stamps, Banknotes & Coins, Bronze Mirror” Section which ended earlier, a "Long Live the Complete Victory of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" (commonly known as the "Big Red One") unissued stamp was traded at a high price of 2.8 million yuan, creating a new record for this stamp in Mainland China. The whole section of “stamps” achieved a high turnover of 13.67 million yuan, a historical high for “stamp” auctions held in Mainland China. It is also the first time that turnover of a “stamp” auction in Mainland China exceeded 10 million Yuan. For Banknotes & Coins, Qing Dynasty Emperor Xianfeng Coin "Great Qing 100", the only piece of its kind in the world, was sold at a high price of 1.96 million yuan, setting a new record for ancient coins. For “Bronze Mirror” part, Tang Dynasty "Copper Mirror with Design of Seat Beast and Grape" broke the record of bronze mirror with a bid price of 2.688 million yuan. A number of World Expo-related precious collections from home and abroad have also attracted the attention of many collectors and ultimately achieved a total turnover of more than 500,000 yuan.
