On January 9, 2008, 'Elegant Collections from a Prosperous Age -- 2008 China Classical Furniture Expos & International Academic Seminar' opened at the World Art Museum of the China Millennium Monument. As a top-level international expo of the grandest scale, it displayed nearly 60 pieces of exquisite Ming and Qing furniture collected by private individuals from home and abroad. Many important perspectives on these works were also presented to the public, some for the first time. A dozen scholars and well-respected experts made special speeches on the latest findings in their studies. From January 9 until February 12, when the exhibition will end, Chinese viewers will have the chance to feast their eyes on the entirety of this collection of Chinese classical furniture.

"Due to the enthusiastic support of all the organizers and coordinators, this is a Chinese classical furniture seminar of the highest grade and includes speeches of the greatest expertise," said Mr. Yang Xin, vice-chairman of China Cultural Relics Society. "It is also the largest and highest grade exhibition of Chinese classical furniture to have been held at home or abroad,” he added. “We hope we can further develop the unique culture of Chinese classical furniture and increase the international exchange, research and development to a new stage with this academic seminar and exhibition." he noted.

Among those making excellent academic speeches at the seminar on the opening day were famous scholars and experts from museums and art study institutes home and abroad such as Mr. Lark Mason, Mrs. Nancy Berliner, Mr. Curtis Evarts, Mr. Ye Chengyao, Mrs. Wu Jia'en, Mr. Tian Jiaqing, Mr. Ma Weidu, Mr. Zhang Dexiang, Mr. Hu Desheng, Mr. Wang Zhengshu, and Mr. Jin Bohong. They made in-depth and authoritative inquiries into the concepts of Chinese classical furniture, into Ming and Qing furniture collection examples and valuations, into the status quo and trends of international academic research in the field, and introduced the latest relevant international findings to the audience.

All the works presented in the exhibition are from private collections from home and abroad. It is a rare concentrated display of articles that has been carefully collected over the years. Among the thirty-plus pieces of Qing palace sandalwood furniture, there are more than ten carved with Western designs, most probably ornaments of the old Yuan Ming Yuan Imperial Garden. Among them, there is one 94.5cm high x 247 cm wide x 175 cm deep sandalwood girdled Arhat bed with sculpture design in mixed Chinese and Western patterns. It is identical with the style of sculptured design found in the European-style palace and jade balustrade of the Yuan Ming Yuan’s Eternal Spring Garden, and is presumably a piece of furniture from a European building in that garden.
