China Guardian announced this week that its 2010 Spring Auction will celebrate the life and art of the Jiangsu painter and calligrapher, Xie Zhiliu, with a special auction, "Zhiliu’s Elegant Brushwork—Fine Paintings and Calligraphy Commemorating Xie Zhiliu’s 100th Birthday" on April 16 in Beijing. On the same day, the Changzhou Museum will open a special Xie Zhiliu exhibition in his hometown. China Guardian’s special auction will present 35 exceptional works that demonstrate stylistic developments during Xie Zhiliu’s early, middle, and late periods.

According to Guo Tong, the general manager of modern and contemporary Chinese painting and calligraphy at Guardian, "This auction was decided after much research. In recent decades we have seen many of Xie Zhiliu's works painted for friends at auction. Moreover, the paintings Xie gifted to friends between the 1930s and 1980s are not fully appreciated as a group. Whether painting for leading artists and experts or for students and young friends, Xie Zhiliu always put his whole heart and full talent into paintings for others. This was not accidental, even if it looks that way to viewers; it represents the artist's true character and sincere respect for others. Conversations with Xie's family seem to confirm this idea. The works he left for his children are somewhat less outstanding and unique than the works he painted for his friends and colleagues. When chatting with the children of Xie Zhiliu's friends and colleagues, they call him Uncle Xie and express their deep respect and admiration. After encountering this several times, I decided to organized a special auction focused on the works Xie Zhiliu painted for Shanghai friends and colleagues, including Wang Yiping, Bai Shuzhang, Han Qufei, Xu Pingyu, Li Yanwu, Cao Manzhi, Zheng Zheng, and others. When Chinese and overseas collectors heard about this idea, there was much support, and in the end we are able to present 35 exceptional works Xie Zhiliu painted for friends in different periods and in varying styles.”

Among these, "Red and White Lotus Opening in the Same Pond" was painted in 1972 when the Shanghai Revolutionary Committee asked Xie Zhiliu to create works to decorate the airport and hotel for the visiting American president, Richard Nixon. In this work, Xie painted six lotus flowers, alternating red and white, with black ink lotus leaves juxtaposed to the pale washes in the pond––a perfect blend of ink and color. Despite the political environment at that time and Xie Zhiliu's own personal investigation, his painting style was always brilliant and cutting edge. This historic painting with red and white lotus was later given to a relative. Another painting in this group was dedicated to Li Yanwu with Chairman Mao's poem "Spring Snow at Qin Park" and is the only painting by Xie Zhiliu with Mao's poetry. In addition, the auction will present "Lotus" inscribed for Han Qufei and Bai Min, "Lotus and Birds" for Bai Shuzhang, "Cloudy Mountains and Stream" for Cao Manzhi, "Clear Autumn Mountains" for Wang Yiping, and "Red Lotus" for Zheng Zhong.
