China Guardian Seasons Auction Brings RMB 60 Million in Results
2013-12-13

China Guardian’s 2006 Seasons Auction No.3 brought in robust results of RMB 60.74 million, with the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy department reaching RMB 43.75 million, including the complete sale of a group of seventeen Ming and Qing dynasty women painters, and a magnificent Zhang Daqian figure painting, ‘Heavenly Lady Spreading Blossoms,’ which changed hands at the sum of RMB 2.365 million.

The auction market in modern Chinese painting as evidenced at the Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Auction, could well be considered in full bloom. At 12:15 the auction had already been in progress for three hours, and some buyers were obviously flagging. However, as the auctioneer announced, “next lot, Zhang Daqian’s ‘Heavenly Lady Spreading Blossoms,’ also the cover lot for this sale…” the atmosphere in the room immediately electrified. Buyers’ attention immediately became focused and all eyes were forward. The auctioneer called out the starting price, “RMB 800,000” and was immediately hailed in return by a bevy of bids.

At first a handful of bidders were in competition, but as the price climbed to RMB 1.2 million, 1.6 million, and on up, new bidders started to join in, and soon enough seven bidders were all in pursuit of the star lot. In the end the lot experienced over fifty bids, concluding at RMB 2.365 million. The style of this work comes from the early thirties, when Zhang Daqian began to explore more finely detailed methods of figure painting, learning from the styles of Chen Hongshou, the Ming painters Tang Yin and Qiu Ying, and expanding to Tang and Song dynasty styles as well. Those experiences brought him to the finely brushed style as evidenced in this exquisite work.

In the Classical Painting and Calligraphy auction, a group of seventeen Ming and Qing dynasty female artists received the attention of a large number of collectors, and all seventeen lots sold. In classical Chinese painting, the lives and works of female artists have been consistently overlooked, and records of their work and existence are very rare. Classical female artists as a group present an air of mystery.

Now, as we research and appreciate their work more, it’s not difficult to see that there is no shortage of excellent and highly skilled works by these artists. Their works often offer a greater sense of finery and a feeling of serenity to contemporary viewers. From a market perspective over these last few years, works by female artists have become an outstanding area for investment, gaining more and more attention from collectors. Prices are ranging from tens of thousands of RMB to millions of RMB, with plenty of room for growth. In this particular sale, Li Yin’s ‘Chrysanthemum and Chicken’ sold for RMB 41,800. Li Yin was a famous poet and painter, known for her bird and flower work in expressive styles.

The Contemporary Painting market continues to be strong as well, with a considerable sales rate, and many of the more active artists in the market are achieving ideal prices. Yang Yanwen’s ‘Immortal Village and Watery Cloud’ and Shi Qi’s ‘Snow Pheasant’ reached RMB 220,000 and RMB 209,000 respectively.

The Porcelain and Works of Art sale reached a total of RMB 16.996 million, with a sales rate of 65.14%. A Yongzheng era ‘Powder Green Covered Jar’ was the star lot, and was collected for RMB 682,000. This jar was created for the palace court and used to keep tealeaves. An image of ‘The Qianlong Emperor Enjoying Winter Scenery’ in the Collection of the Forbidden City includes a piece of the same style. A Jiaqing era ‘Doucai Lingzhi Mushroom Plate,’ a rare and excellent example of Jiaqing Doucai ware, rose from RMB 3,000 to RMB 385,000.

A piece of the same style is in the Forbidden City Collection. A ‘Qianlong era Doucai Chrysanthemum Cluster Jar,’ although slightly damaged, sold for the considerable sum of RMB 275,000. Doucai chrysanthemum cluster motifs are a traditional ware of the Qing dynasty imperial kilns, and their production was held to the highest standards by the Qianlong emperor. This lot was particularly special as it was accompanied by exquisitely crafted packaging, with an ivory-imbedded mahogany stand, and a mahogany and gold worked nanmu wood box. One last work of note was a Tang dynasty ‘Changsha Kiln Bottle with ‘Mutual Consideration’ Poem in Brown-Glazed Calligraphy’, a piece of both cultural and artistic merit, which sold for RMB 79,200.
